Tuesday September 26, 8:02 am Eastern Time Press Release SOURCE: Optibase Ltd. TDK and Optibase Introduce MPEG-4-Based Streaming Server Software TDK-Optibase Alliance Delivers Landmark Streaming Media Solution TOKYO, Japan and HERZILYA, Israel, Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- TDK Corp. and Optibase Ltd. (Nasdaq: OBAS - news) announced today that they have developed a streaming server based on the MPEG-4 ISO international multimedia standard. This project was launched as the first step in a development alliance, formed in July of 1999, between the two companies in the field of Internet-based applications built on MPEG-4 technology. Targeted at the broadband Internet and multimedia cellular telephone markets, the server is designed to provide a fully-defined multimedia streaming MPEG-4-based platform that allows the distribution of multi-object multimedia scenes over networks for use with PCs, PDAs, and set-top boxes.
The convergence of Internet and broadcast media has introduced a new form of customized content, turning end-users from passive content consumers to active ones. The MPEG-4 platform, based on technology developed in this project, enables end-users to easily access information as selected by service providers, taking user preference into account and allowing flexible interaction with the content. The platform targets applications ranging from business TV and distance learning to interactive advertising, gaming and more.
According to Shunjiro Saito, TDK Executive Vice President in charge of R&D, ``TDK is focusing on MPEG-4 technologies as solutions for streaming media under broadband Internet environments and next-generation mobile terminals, both of which are expected to develop greatly in the future. By joining forces with Optibase, which has a proven track record with MPEG technologies, we hope to respond to the needs of new and expanding markets.''
``Optibase is committed to lead the industry in delivering streaming media solutions for Internet-based applications,'' said Yehuda Elmaliach, Vice President and CTO of Optibase. ``Our MPEG-4 technologies will serve as the foundation for high quality, scalable and robust innovative solutions.''
