Pete, <In drag races, the P4 might come out ahead (some times substantially), but which one would you use to go to the grocery store? Commuting to work? On a trip from SF to Washington? Most of the time?>

The Willamette guys here in Oregon regularly commute to San Francisco using their Pentium 4. Going at 1.5 GHz, they can reach San Fran from here in a little over half an hour.

As for trips to the grocery store, I personally use my Coppermine Pentium III. It's not as good as the P4, but it still helps me choose the fruits and vegetables and household items that I need.

<Remember when Intel touted MMX? That has turned out to be a yawner at best.>

A yawner that AMD soon implemented in their CPUs. Remember when AMD touted 3DNow? That has turned out to be a real yawner, so much so that AMD now has to support SSE in their upcoming Sledgehammer.
