The survey found that 34 percent of shoppers end up looking for or purchasing items in stores that they originally saw on retailers' Web pages, while 27 percent of customers look for or buy products online that they originally spotted at the mall. And 51 percent who received retailers' catalogs used the books to buy things online.

James,

This "survey" is really accurate. I can prove this at least here. We often have people coming in to see items they saw on our web site. It is a major success for us and my competition in both geographic markets are advertising they are not on the web but they have a "real store" and nice people working there. So do we have a real store and nice people but the web is taking a toll on our competition particularly for loose diamonds and basic birthstone jewelry.

You know I am not bullish on Amazon but I am not not impressed with their "cumulative" 22 million customers. We spent to no money in addition to our basic advertising. We have a little over 4000 cumulative customers with a 80%+ return customer rate on-line. We are not in Europe. We do not market past three counties. tthe on-line inventory is updated via my server here using our POS software so an on-line order will not be out of stock. I just do not understand what the big deal is with Amazon now have lost $2 billion to accomplish on a little larger scale what we accomplished with a little work internally.

I was wondering lately about Amazon's recent statement about this year they are going to fly people from Seattle to work the Findly Nevada center. My wondering is that last time they stated they made it madatory and people had to stay there for a month. This year it is volutary but Amazon is offering a person that lives in Seattle an all paid flight to Reno, Nevada where they stay in a hotel room. A continual around the clock buffet for those working all shifts free of charge to the employee. Access to the exercise and game rooms. The stay is only 10 days so it is like a two week free vacation with time and a half pay. My guess is the typical employee volunteering will be young and single. The bars and casinos are open 24 hours so these younger people can work their shirt, eat and drink for hours. They may be a little hung over when they arrive at work the next day but they are young. This plan is suppost to finaincailly efficient which with theses added costs, makes it difficult for me to understand. There is also the flights of these hundreds if not thousands of people from Seattle to Findley, Nevada every ten days.

I wonder if when this area was chosen if Amazon forgot to notice there was no work force there.

Glenn

PS Edit: Amazon is providing shuttle buses from Reno to Findley for the entire month.
