SACRED JOURNEY is the true story about a Native American who lives on the streets of New York City. A story of degradation and redemption, SACRED JOURNEY is a solo play that follows "Indian John," a man the playwright met on the streets, as he triumphs over adversity through the recovery of his spiritual heritage.
Matt Witten (Playwright) is a playwright, novelist, and television writer, and is currently a story editor for "Law and Order." His plays The Deal and Washington Square Moves have been presented frequently and are published by Dramatists Play Service. In addition to writing episodes of "Law and Order," he has also written for TV's "Homicide: Life on the Streets." His first two novels "Breakfast at Madeline's" and "Grand Illusion" have been published by Signet Books, and in November, Signet will publish his latest novel "Strange Bedfellows."
Michael Warren Powell (Director) is on the directing faculty at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. He was formerly the Artistic Director of the Circle Rep Lab, where he directed readings and workshops of SACRED JOURNEY. Also at Circle, he directed the acclaimed revival of William Hoffman's As Is and Will Calhone's Balcony Scene. Michael's company, Circle East, develops plays and playwrights in the tradition of Circle Rep.

Gregory Zaragoza ("Indian John") recently concluded a long run as Chief Sitting Bull in the Tony Award-winning revival of Annie Get Your Gun. His New York Theatre credits also include Loving Daniel Boone (Tribeca Film Center), Centaur Battle of San Jacinto (Public Theater), Two Cities and Hot Keys. His film credits include The Last of the Mohicans, The Thin Line, Kazoo and the upcoming Fishes Outta Wata. On TV, he was most recently seen in "Grace and Glorie" with Gena Rowlands.
For the past five years, SACRED JOURNEY was performed to great acclaim by Adan Sanchez, a Mescalero-Apache actor who originated the role of "Indian John." Sanchez, who toured in the play throughout the Midwest and Southwest, as well as two tours in Great Britain, died suddenly in 1998. The Blue Heron Theatre dedicates the New York Premiere of SACRED JOURNEY to Mr. Sanchez's memory.
SACRED JOURNEY has scenic and lighting design by Roman Tatarowicz, costume design by Martha Louise Bromelmeier, and sound design by Samuel C. Tresler.

During the run of SACRED JOURNEY an exhibit of the work of Native American artist Gary Quanah Parker will be displayed in the Gallery at Blue Heron Arts Center.
The Blue Heron Theatre is an award-winning non-profit organization, founded in 1987, which develops, creates, and produces dramatic and educational projects focusing on issues and ideas -- a thinking person's theatre.
