Dave B. re: DDR standards.
The industry isn't as loosey goosey as some would imply.
For example, here's JESD79, the JEDEC specification for 64Mb DDRSDRAM's.
(Page 2 is informative).
Any company wanting JEDEC approval for DDR must meet the specification. Since an Industry committee generated and voted on the specification, I assume all manufacturers will meet these requirements. (It is required to insure interchangeability of components). It's possible to add features beyond the spec, but JEDEC approval requires meeting all the requirements of this spec. (I doubt if any company will manufacture DDR product without JEDEC approval).
I assume there will be similar specifications for DIMM's to insure interchangeability at that level. There may be some hiccups in the beginning, but the clear objective of JEDEC is to insure all manufacturers produce reliable, interchangeable parts. Think of JEDEC as the "clearing house."
