256 colors is the maximum with Windows 2000 when you are running terminal services. The reason is the protocol, not the display drivers capabilities, color settings or whatsoever. For some unknown reason, MSFT obviously wasn't capable to improve this protocol to do more than 256 colors. I mean, they are able to extend Kerberos, why not the RDP protocol? My wallpaper still looks bad.
