Anyway, I'm convinced that most government programs professing to help the poor actually guarantee that those people unfortunate enough to qualify never leave that situation.

I did (leave the situation) and so did several of my friends, family members and acquaintances that were at one time recipients of public benefits. At risk of starting one of those awful class discussions, what most people forget is that the biggest beneficiaries of government largess are actually middle class. If you doubt that, ask anyone that went to a State College, or that got a government subsidized educational loan or anyone whose parents receive SS benefits and medicare....then add up the percentage of people eligible for those benefits (I'll give you a hint, almost everyone).

Yeah, I know.... they are the ones paying in so they deserve it.....right? I'm certain you'd be surprised at how many former welfare recipients there are that are tax paying adults. Consider the fact that the biggest percentage of people on welfare today and in the past are children and I've heard that some of them actually grow up to own businesses and employ other people (even employing ex-welfare mothers as well as middle class white guys).

I do empathize with your babysitter and I'd be angry too if my money given to a charity was being spent like that. I've done a lot of work for any number of non-profits and they can be just as lavish with other people's money as any big corporation can be. We had a big United Way scandal a while back. It angered a lot of the troops, because in a lot of companies some people fairly low down on the pay scale are heavily pressured into giving. I'd say that scandal produced a great deal of "compassion fatigue" among the middle class and working class contributors that are United Way's mainstay.
