Wait a minute. I thought a sell side analyst is one who is not that bullish on the stock. Do I have my terminology mixed up?

An analyst from a broker-dealer is usually considered a sell-side analyst. An analyst from an asset management firm is considered a buy-side analyst. Sometimes, there is confusion because the media, like your favorite CNBC, don't distinguish the two when it comes to firms which have both. When you hear about upgrades/downgrades etc., that's usually coming from the sell-side. ML has sell-side and buy-side analysts. ML fund managers are considered buy-side people. The two sides may and frequently do have opposing opinions on the same stocks.
