Intel's Early Warning

(at dismal.com. Reads like Bill F dictated it word for word)

Looking forward, deceleration in the U.S. business PC market seems inevitable. As a mature
capital equipment market, slowing business output in response to weaker consumer demand
will result in a more than proportional slowdown in equipment purchases. The consumer
market is unlikely to rebound during the current year and counteract this slowing, as few,
new, innovative products are scheduled until next year.

Anecdotal reports already indicate weakening in the server market, as slowing revenue
growth at dot coms prompts caution in the expansion of e-business capacity. Furthermore,
business surveys show weaker IT spending plans among small businesses. With more
volatile capital costs and fewer options, small businesses are generally the first to curtail
investment spending during general economic slowdowns.

Eventually, as larger corporate purchasers begin slowing IT spending later this year in
response to a slower growing macro economy, growth in PC sales will likely slide by half.
So, even though Intel's warning applied to specific problems in its own operations, it should
also serve as a harbinger for the next six months.
