WIND--Wind River Unveils Tornado for Intelligent I/O 2.0 Provides Storage and Networking Acceleration for Increased Bandwidth and Throughput ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2000--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced general availability of Tornado® for Intelligent I/O 2.0, an integrated software development environment for input/output (I/O) processors.
This new version of the software includes TCP/IP support, which means developers can now build sophisticated networking into their I/O devices. A fully integrated software development platform, Tornado for Intelligent I/O is used by developers to create high performance I/O applications that are targeted towards emerging areas such as network attached storage (NAS), storage area networks (SANs), IP storage and web accelerators.
``Many server and networking vendors struggle to manufacture products that can keep up with the enormous data throughput (or I/O) demands of the Internet,'' said Dave Fraser, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Networks business unit. ``With the addition of networking capability, Tornado for Intelligent I/O becomes a true network and storage accelerator, giving developers the ability to build complex scalable I/O solutions that meet these new bandwidth demands.'' P. ``Wind River has been part of Intel's efforts to make intelligent I/O a reality from the start,'' said Wendy Vittori, general manager of Intel I/O products division. ``As a result, Wind River's software is the perfect platform for intelligent I/O. The software, which is intimately tied to Intel I/O processors, greatly simplifies I/O application development and scales across a range of intelligent I/O configurations -- from dedicated I/O devices to complex distributed I/O systems serving multiple CPUs.''
Increased Scalability
According to Cahners In-Stat Group, US businesses are investing as much as 20% of their total IT spending on Internet-enabling services, personnel and solutions. With this level of Internet connectivity, the demand for I/O bandwidth has exploded. However, adding multiple servers to solve this problem can be a costly proposition. Tornado for Intelligent I/O 2.0 offers a more cost-effective alternative by providing a complete platform for development of scalable I/O systems. It also supports the full range of Intel I/O processors, including the Intel IOP303, i960Rx, Intel StrongARM* SA110, and future processors based on the Intel® XScale(TM) microarchitecture.
