While you are doing all your thinking maybe you should think about the appropriatness of having three years plus of your total production sold short in a currency the US dollar that is extremely overvalued and whose movements are completely beyond managements control. If you think measuring your level of short sales against the amount of your reserves is a prudent way to judge your risk you are not as deep a thinker as I had thougth. THink about it reserves are not the germane factor. The crucial question is how much gold you can get at in a reasonable period of time. And how happy the other parties will be with that amount compared to your obligations.

What portion was the gold short position of Ashanti against their reserves?

That didn't mean diddly squat when they had to refinance with their bankers or die. Did it? What makes you think the management of Barrick has any special knowledge of what will happen to their costs of production or the ultimate market price of gold in US dollars five or six years out? The arrogance of their management to think they can control these factors is collosal.

When someone is evaluating how much your family can earn to pay your mortgage do they figure on the adult earnings of your adolescent children or on the current and available earning power of you and your wife?
