Most people find the smell of burning semiconductor material offensive, and it is also rather toxic.

Really? It is very hard to get silicon to burn. Silicon (and its oxide) are very inert biologically and have been used in implantable microelectrodes in direct contact with nerve tissues.

Although the dopants (for example arsenic and phosporus) are toxic in high concentrations, such concentrations are not found in semiconductors.

Anyway, one of the references that Carl posted a few weeks ago was a document by Micron which claimed that Rambus uses about the same power as DDR at high data rates.
