Gore discussed Medicare at a town hall meeting in Altoona, Iowa, speaking briefly and taking questions from the friendly audience. Most questions included complaints about high drug costs and disputes with HMOs.

The most touching comments came from Winifred Skinner, 79, who said she prowled ditches along roads collecting soft drink cans for the 5-cent deposits to help pay her prescription costs.

Gore responded by hugging her.
