I had envisioned these appliances not connected to the net or making repair calls on their own, but connecting to a small display unit in the basement or closet that alerted you when the machine was needing service. If they could make this work over power line networking (I think ELON is aiming for this type of thing), then I think it could be a success, as no extra wiring would be required. I think most people would balk at having to put an ethernet jack behind every major appliance they own, and would be very hesitant about having the thing broadcasting over the net. (I think it would be kind of cool though) This would be my guess for the near term generation of connected appliances, although bluetooth type devices would not need the fixed wiring, and could be stimulus for these connected appliances.
