Roberto Clemente will always be my idol

The baseball he signed for me as a 15-year-old rests on my television set to this day.

And, by the way, I am the person who saw him throw the ball into the upper deck behind third when trying to throw out a runner going from first to third on a single. It put me into a state of complete and utter shock.

I also saw him once hit a ball that the pitcher almost caught. It was still rising over Forbes Field's center field wall as it officially went into orbit.

The day he died is etched in my memory. He was 38 years old. What a pity. Hundreds of people who lived on Mount Washington, overlooking Pittsburgh, banded together January 1, 1973, sewed hundreds of bedsheets together, painted "Adios Amigo, Roberto" on the conglomeration, and hung it over the mountain.

WGN in Chicago cancelled all regular programming on January 1 and dedicated the entire day to showing highlights of his career.

The Baseball Writers of America suspended the rules requiring a five-year waiting period for a player's election to the Hall of Fame. Clemente was immediately elected and enshrined in the summer of 1973. The first Latin American baseball player ever enshrined.

The man was a God. "The Great Roberto." He single-handedly made growing up in Pittsburgh a privilege. "Arriba" Roberto.
