With convertibility no longer an issue gold should be regarded IMO as a reserve of last resort - the largest holding of many CBs in fact - used sometimes as collateral for loans also - I seem to recall this being the case with Italy some years back. And I can't think it has helped Canada's and Australia's currencies since they sold off their reserves - but it can't be proved.
