Japan's Copper Demand to Rise 6% on Strong Electronics Demand
9/28/0 7:31 (New York)

Tokyo, Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese copper demand will
likely rise 6 percent this year from last year, as increased
demand from domestic electronics companies offsets a drop in
exports to Asian markets, an industrial group said.
The Japan Brass Makers Association lifted its projection for
copper demand in the year to March 2001 to 1.15 million metric
tons from an earlier estimate of 1.13 million tons. Last year,
demand was 1.08 million tons.
``We've seen strong domestic demand from semiconductor and
connector'' makers, said Kazunori Matsuzaka, general manager at
the association. ``The strong demand will likely continue for a
while.''
Japanese companies have lost market share overseas to rivals
in South Korea and Taiwan as a strong yen and high labor have made
them unable to match rivals lower prices, the official said.
``We've seen prices falling as Korean and Taiwan companies
are selling at lower prices than the Japanese do,'' he said.
