While I agree with your assessment of NT I don't agree on LU. We shall see.. Remember - buy low/sell high. LU is down - no doubt about ... looks bad... no doubt about it... that is precisely when to buy a company that has a strong franchise. LU is far broader than optics. I continue to hear the same droning here from NT bigots - that if you're not in optics then you "suck". Yes, optics is what makes NT great. God knows they not executed anywhere else...so by NT's definintion I suppose the only way to succeed is to have a stong optical portfolio. Guess what! There are other technologies and markets outside of optics. Really! There is! Furthermore, I think it's shortsighted to assume that LU wil continue to fail in the optical market.

Two key things to note about LU. First they have a first class opto-electronics/semi business which they're going to spin off. THis business rivals that of NT and JDSU. JDSU's cap is over $100B. LU in total is now worth under $100B. LU also has a fiber business that is as good as GLW's. GLW has a cap of about $90B+ (it's pretty volatile). I would guess that LU's should be worth that or mayby a little less. LU is spinning off the slow/no growth telecom products to AVAYA. That will clean things up greatly. Yes, LU hasn't execucted in optical network elements at 10G... but they running hard at OC768.

Like I said , I think it's shortsighted to assume LU isn't a good investment at a cap of $100B. I would suggest that they are probably an easier double than most companies in this sector - certainly a better chance of it than CSCO.
