>>Krispy Kreme downtown? Story has a big hole By Charlie Meyerson Tribune Staff Writer September 28, 2000 Despite rumors that have spread like wildfire among salivating office workers in downtown Chicago, local publicists for the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp. would not confirm reports that a shop is planned for the Shops at North Bridge, the North Michigan Avenue complex anchored by the Nordstrom department store.
A spokeswoman for the North Bridge project's developer, John Buck Co., Lori Ann Weirich, confirmed that visitors to the new shopping complex have been asking employees since last week's opening, "Where's the Krispy Kreme?"
But speaking for Sweet Traditions LLC, the St. Louis-based firm that has been Krispy Kreme's Chicago-area developer, Jennifer Topolewski of Margie Korshak Inc. said, "We're actively looking at opportunities in downtown Chicago. ... But we have no specifics to announce at this time."
Since a brief mention in the Chicago Sun-Times on Sept. 17, Krispy Kreme rumors have rolled from desk to desk, from floor to floor, and even from Chicago to Sydney, Australia, from which a Chicago sports editor at the Olympics asked a Chicago radio personality about the rumor on-air Wednesday.
But, as the person who prepared news releases and media information for the North Bridge opening, Topolewski said that Krispy Kreme was not mentioned once in the material. And she said she was surprised to see a newspaper report connect Krispy Kreme to the project.
She could confirm only earlier announcements of new Krispy Kreme shops to open in December in the suburbs of Elk Grove Village and Woodridge. |
