RESEARCH ALERT- VerticalNet strong buy reiterated

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - W.R. Hambrecht on Thursday
reiterated its investment rating of "strong buy" on VerticalNet
Inc. after a meeting with the company's management.
-- Analyst Derek Brown also maintained a 12-month price
target of $80 on the stock.
-- "A steady flow of alliances, partnerships, product
introductions, and/or acquisitions could serve as key catalysts
for VerticalNet's stock price over the next 3 to 6 months,"
Brown said in a research note.
-- He expects the company to report strong third-quarter
results in late October, ahead of his estimates of a per-share
loss of 28 cents on revenues of $61 million.
-- "Street concerns regarding VerticalNet's electronic
components exchange business and its relationship with Internet
Capital Group (Inc. ) appear exaggerated, in our
opinion," Brown said.
VerticalNet stock closed at $32-5/8, up $2-9/16, after a
similar reiteration from another firm. The stock has traded in
a narrow range since dropping from its 52-week high of $148-3/8
reached March 10 to $25-7/8 five weeks later.
