What we are seeing here is psychological warfare (PsyOps) applied to business. I suspect we will see a lot more of it as we go forward.

The techniques are not new. They have been used effectively since World War II by the Allies in particular but also by the Germans less successfully.

The objective is to confuse and demoralize supporters of the targeted company and its products. The ultimate goal in this case is to defeat Rambus by derailing Intel's committment to RDRAM and discouraging MMs from signing royalty agreements and manufacturing RDRAM.

The value of delay is that, hopefully, it buys time to field a competitive alternative, it this case, SLDRAM (failed) or DDR (possible partial solution) or some future alternative.

Like America at the begining of WW2 who needed time to mobilize and develop a response to blitzkreig, the MMs need time to mobilize their resources and develop an effective alternative to RDRAM and Rambus' IP which reduces the MMs to captive fab houses.

The MM driven (with AMD's cooperation) FUD campaign has been at least partially successful, aided somewhat by Intel's own miscues on the 820 (should have been dual channel). RDRAM has not been stopped, but it has been slowed and its credibility called into question.

The threads of the WWW have provided a new mechanism for spreading the misinformation that is the essence of PsyOps. They are anonymous. A group can serve under a single identity. Besides paid agents there are partisan volunteers attracted to the conflict. There may even be double agents providing misinformation to the FUDsters. No acountability is yet inforced by the thread managers. There appear to be few consequences to companies or individuals that pay to spread misinformation.

Interestingly, SI may be particularly vulnerable to such manipulation by paid fudsters and volunteers, whether operating individually or as a unit.

The SI price of admission limits the number of participants and therefore makes it easier for the well funded to dominate the posts and drive other posters away.

Curiously, the fud about P4 may be working somewhat to Intel's advantage. Clearly Intel is attempting a "bet the company" shift to a new scaleable PC architecture which will blanket all segments of the market over the next three or four quarters.

Secrecy about the P4 maximizes the impact when the product finally becomes available. If AMD believes that P4/RDRAM is a dud, they may find themselves left without adequate ammunition when the real fight starts.
