*OT* I would have no problem if, in certain cases, we allowed a particular company/coalition of companies to develop/control standards....

Let 'em (the companies/company who control the standard) make a ton of money...BUT apply some sort of special charge/tax (another way to pay down the deficit!) and regulate them...allow terms to be flexible so that, as technology changes, any deal can be undone...

(Of course, I am unconfortable with the gvt. getting their paws into it...but I see no other better solution in (ONLY) those areas where we need a clear standard..
