NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Shares of Apple Computer Inc. (NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) lost nearly 40 percent of their value in after-hours trade on Thursday after the computer maker warned its fourth-quarter profits would widely miss forecasts due to slower than expected sales in September.

Apple said in a statement it expects to report fourth quarter earnings of 30 to 33 cents per diluted share, excluding investment gains, compared with the consensus analyst forecast of 45 cents. Revenues should come in between $1.85 and $1.9 billion for the quarter ending Sept. 30, it said.
