He met the Abbe Faria in the prison of Chateau d'If who told him of a great lost fortune. Dantes escaped in the burial shroud of the Abbe after the Abbe died, recovered the lost fortune, and used it to achieve a bittersweet revenge against those who had ruined him. It's kind of the original Bruce Willis movie. :-) Dan
