I offer condolences to those who feel keenly his passing, in particular his sons.

But I will not be so Canadian in this that I will refuse to speak ill of the dead. Indeed, his legacy is enormous, and he will be writ large in our history books. For many of us, though, that legacy is one of destruction.

A Social Democrat through and through, Trudeau took Pearson's mantle to heart. Well intentioned, he nevertheless undermined national unity -- perhaps fatally. He enthusiastically took up the cause of social engineering. He set back Canada's economy by a generation. He alienated all those who did not share his vision, bourne of wealth and an isolated Jesuit education. I mourn less his passing than the day he chose to enter politics.
