I like Starbucks--they are very consistent and you can find them everywhere. In contrast, most local shops are very inconsistent (e.g., milk temperature and amount of milk added). Making cappuccino is not rocket science, but there are a few parameters that need watching. Perhaps because it is a new beverage in most parts of the US, people do not know how to make it properly. To get a good cappuccino maker and grinder, mail order is easiest unless you live in a coffee haven. I have a Rancilio "Miss Audrey" and burr grinder that are very good for home use. I have found the kinds of cappuccino machines and grinders available in department stores and Starbucks to be a waste of money. My machine cost $365 two years ago, and is at the low price end of what I believe are good machines for the home user. I bought it at wholelattelove.com, which has a number of good machines. This is what my machine looks like: wholelattelove.com
