I wonder if GBLX might be somehow involved in this, like they were with the British Embassy deal not too long ago... wasn't someone hinting that there were some big deals going to be announced soon...?
NAVY SAYS $16B INTRANET CONTRACT AWARD DUE BY NEXT WEEK:
The largest information technology contract in Defense Department history, worth as much as $16 billion over eight years, could be awarded as early as Friday or Monday, according to Navy officials. The contract is to build and maintain a new information system to provide voice, e-mail, and video services to 367,000 users. Among those competing to set up and service the intranet are teams led by General Dynamics Corp. and software giants Electronic Data Systems Corp., IBM Corp., and Computer Sciences Corp. The basic contract could be worth up to $10 billion with a three-year option worth another $6 billion. "It is our intention to award the contract by the end of this fiscal year and we still hope to do so," said Lt. Susan Alexander, a Navy spokeswoman. The contract has been on hold until the House and Senate armed services committees that set overall spending policy finish their budget for the fiscal year beginning October 1. The committees have concerns about overall cost and whether the so-called Navy-Marine Corp Intranet would adversely affect naval depots in California, Maine, North Carolina and Florida that repair ships and aircraft. The Navy selected the winner in late June but has kept it secret pending approval from civilian Pentagon officials, Congress and the U.S. General Accounting Office. Pentagon official have given their approval and the GAO has issued no strong objections to the contract, aides said. (Bloomberg) |
