Frankly, Andy, I am skeptical that MKE would exit the drive manufacture business. Not only are they good at it, they will be (are now) supplying drives for their sister company Panasonic's digital recorders and TVs. Drives will be used in coming years for more and more consumer businesses, and MKE will be in the thick of it.

What I have heard is that they want to expand their drive business, and one reason that the HDD/MXTR merger could happen is they agreed to it in return for an equity position in the newly merged companies. I find that speculation more plausible than MKE getting out of the business.

This will make HDD and Maxtor both stronger companies. They will be a much more flexible company with in-house capacity to complement MKE's capacity, able to respond better to the rapidly changing fortunes of the drive business.
