I totally disagree, having worked in Indonesia for four years. Your view of the Indonesian culture is a common one in western eyes but does not recognize the positive characteristics that make the nation function, despite its rather unwieldy and mediocre government. I do not believe any person raised and educated in a western country can successfully work with Indonesians (or others in the Asian community as well) without gaining an appreciation and understanding of the strengths and weaknesses from the inside, rather than the outside. A great many Indonesians have a very pragmatic outlook, making it EASIER for Americans, who are often like minded, to get along very successfully. Building working relationships doesn't happen overnight, however. Despite the governmental weaknesses and the cronyism without both government and private sectors, Indonesia is one of the most promising places to do business successfully. But, as the salesman sang in "The Music Man," you have to know the territory. Art
