OT!!! Dave B, Still, I think that humanity is improving socially, politically, economically, and medically. I believe we are at the peak of "civilized behavior", but that it will get even better over time.
Since the general direction of civilization is toward democracy rather than totalitarinism, these people have the freedom to act on these impulses. But you can't get rid of the bad parts of Freedom without getting rid of the good parts. FWIW, I think that the next big area "people" need to improve on is the area of personal responsibility -- accepting that you can control your own destiny and accepting the consequences of your actions.
My thoughts for your reading pleasure!! Politically we are seeing more democracy throughout the world, and in many places economically we are very rich, and science is advancing rapidly ... so there are a lot of good things happening. The problem is that Democracy only works when the more part of the people are moral and decent and "personally responsible"! This is exactly where we are declining as a society. Extended periods of prosperity seem to bring self-gratification, selfishness, and immorality. These characteristics have and will destroy civilization. The "Jerry Springerizing" of our society will destroy it.
So I agree that we are advancing in many areas but in the areas that ultimately count we are deteriorating.
Because of selfishness, The Family is falling apart and children are being neglected because of the parents' vices be what they may (drugs, money, personal pleasure, vanity). In turn, the children are messed up and raise more messed up children and the problem grows exponentially.
So we live longer and with more stuff and much convenience but socially ILL. Murder, drugs, abuse, theft, and fraud will grow. Unless we change and be more moral and personally responsible. Maybe I'll take that Mud Hut!
