Press Release Clients Of Southeastern Asset Management, Inc. Now Own 13.6% Of Gulf Canada Resources Limited MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE--Clients of Southeastern Asset Management, Inc. (``Southeastern''), an investment adviser registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, own in the aggregate as of September 28, 2000, a total of 48,200,960 ordinary shares of Gulf Canada Resources Limited (``Gulf Canada''), amounting to approximately 13.6% of the 353,983,524 shares outstanding. Of this total, Longleaf Partners Small-Cap Fund owns 20,936,560 or approximately 5.9%, but no other account owns as much as 5%. Southeastern does not own any shares for its own account.
On behalf of its clients, Southeastern intends to continue to be active in recommending or encouraging a wide variety of corporate transactions in discussions with Gulf Canada's management or with third parties which could have the effect of enhancing shareholder value, as reflected in its Schedule 13D filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
