With the economy coming somewhat unglued, sub-$500 PC's may become quite popular again.

Someday they will. Packard Bell pioneered the sub-$1000 PC, but couldn't be profitable at it because they couldn't build in enough quality at the time for the price (I'll tell you a Packard Bell story sometime). The other vendors brought prices down in a more orderly and profitable manner. The latest crop of sub-$500 PC companies haven't been profitable either, but certainly as technology advances, improves, and miniaturizes, the responsible (to their shareholders) companies will bring out profitable sub-$500 PCs.

Sony's already planning to do it, and my guess is that they'll do it profitably (i.e. not use it as a loss-leader).
