Texas Instruments will sell its chips and software to four Chinese cell-phone makers in an effort to increase its presence in China, one of the the world's top cellular markets.

Texas Instruments, whose chips are found in two-thirds of the world's cellular phones, will supply its digital signal processors to ZTE, Xiamen Overseas Chinese Electronic, Beijing Huahong IC Design and Ningbao Bird. The four companies will form a joint venture funded by China's Ministry of Industry Information.

The ministry forecasts the number of cellular subscribers in China will rise from 59.3 million in the first half of this year to 140 million by 2003, TI said. The Dallas-based company controls almost half of the $4.4 billion market for digital signal processors, which function as the command center for mobile phones.
