Tench,

I had this discussion on this thread about a year ago with Amy i think.

Clearly diversifying is a good idea for any company.

But when u are a $25Bn/yr company u need to act big and go into markets and try and dominate them.

GE's Jack Welch is well known for saying a division is either number 1 or 2 in a given segment or has a short term plan to get there or it is NUKED - sold off/shut down.

Intel decided to buy a graphics outfit. Who did they buy Chips and Tech a LOSER in that market and a tiny player.

Intel decided to get into DSPs. Forget who they bought. A tiny NO NAME outfit. TI and ADI are the leaders. SHould have picked up ADI.

Web Hosting is another fiasco. Instead of buying a leader like exodus. They have a homegrown effort thats out of the top 10.

The moves that management have made have been weak, take low financial risk type of moves. The end result after 3 yrs of diversification is that they are a mess and reliant even more on processors for profit as they lose money on these small ventures.

Intel has been saved by the rocketing valuation of its investments. Without these the companys execution truly sucks. Fortunately for intel these have largely been in the hot internet/telecom area. But we all know hot areas turn cold and this cannot be a major long term revenue source.

My suspicion is that if Q4 is not as robust as we all expect that might be the final straw.

The current betting on Barret is he'll be sacrificed by superbowl sunday.

As far as a replecement i suspect that anyone from within intel will likely be a flop. They need an outsider to renergise the troops and take an axe to the middle management.

regards,

Kash
