Tench, The way I saw it, AMD was also hinting that they can eventually match the capabilities of EPIC (VLIW). I don't think AMD designed (is designing) SledgeHammer as a response to Itanium. Itanium is not here yet, has no market share, it may or may not develop a niche for itself. The real target is the IA-32 world. AMD wants to become the king of this world, by delivering processor that beats Foster and its follow-ups. The x86-64 core will be pushed from servers to workstations and mainstream machines fairly quickly. Just like when 386 replaced 286. The lack of 386 software didn't stop it from becoming an overnight success. This is the model AMD wants to follow. Joe
