Our age is not without ethics. We have many superb ethics. How about "Equal opportunity" and "No discrimination"? And that's just for starters. Ethics abound- from prohibitions on workplace harassment to rules governing conflict of interest by insiders of corporations. Just about every professional organization has a cannon of professional ethics- I know the legal system does and that they take that cannon seriously.

Further nothing "needs" to take God's place- Ravi assumes the proposition on this one. One can simply accept that there is a great unknown- that there is NO absolute morality and there never has been- of course some people would like to force one ethical morality on everyone- but it isn't a pretty thing to contemplate. There was ignorance of other customs in the far distant past- that allowed people to think there was one morality. But there never has been one in all of recorded history- and I'd bet dollars to donuts there never will be one.

I've been to Auschwitz too- and poor Ravi overcome by his experience there, comes to the conclusion that forcing one ethical morality on people is the answer? Oh dear. No matter how "high" you think you are going for your morality- there is no neat and non-violent way to shove it down everyone's throat. The Nazis thought they had one ethical morality they could force on people. No matter what law you pick- you have the chance that Nazi like behavior will happen, becuase people who believe they are absolutely right will from time to time do absolutely awful things. Like Ravi- who clearly thinks he is absolutely right. Oh dear. Oh dear.

Where you have many different religions and streams of wisdom Nazi like behavior is unlikely to occur- becuase Nazi behavior takes GROUP think- and group think simply isn't possible when a society has the protection of not being monolithic.

Doubt is, imo, the answer. Multiculturalism and acceptance are good things. Poor Ravi looks at America and thinks we are in trouble- I've got news for him- we've ALWAYS been in trouble. Humanity always has problems and every age thinks there's is the worst, and some small segment will always think the world is going to end in their lifetime.

In the middle ages the plagues were a sign that things were falling apart- first the bubonic plagues then the "French disease". Famines were a sign that things were falling apart- (I read an interesting aside in Barzun's book that during much of the middle ages people were so underfed that many of them may have seen visions due to starvation! Now there's an interesting explanation for the fixation on devils and angels in the middle ages.)

At the turn of the century in Victorian England and America there was one prostitute for every ten men. Prostitution absolutely exploded during this era. Demon drink was also considered a substantial problem- and in fact the obsession with the devil drink culminated in the ill fated attempt at prohibition.

Let's not forget the vices of the opium dens either.

That wasn't really worth a listen, Greg, that was false advertising. It was a waste of my time. Your credibility is slipping. Next time I probably won't click on a link from you.
