When you write: "ADSL, followed by cable, followed by wireless. It is a race between the ILEC/CLEC and MSO to get fiber close enough to the bandwidth sucking consumers, and the costs for that portion of the network are comparable for either." you are cutting down ADSL to size. May I say niche player?

Lebensraum and copper pairs.

Hitler talked about lebensraum. In his view Germany had not too much space and would need room to live. So he wanted to grab Poland, Ukraine and a piece of the Soviet Union. But the problem was that that piece of 'raum' was already being used by Polish, Ukrainians and Russians. It is the same with ADSL. Everyone says: Hey here is a nice technology that can use copper pairs. Lets implement it! But the copper pairs are not there for the taking they are owned by some other people that have some different ideas of what they want to do with it.

And that's not use it for dirty cheap -always on- Internet connections.
