Charles, you are now glossing over what is free. When the software was free as you mention in the early history of computing, you were actually paying for it without knowing it. They were "bundling" it in, never allowing you to buy it piecemeal. So, you have no way of knowing what was the cost of the software that was on the system. The same about a cell-phone. You pay for it indirectly. The carrier pays off the cellphone maker. This is not the same as Linux. The software is free. You don't have to pay for anything to anyone in any way for Linux. That is not in the same league as "free softwar" or free "cell phone". Frankly, I am surprised you even made these points...
