I-mode and WAP side by side...

KPN, NTT to Launch European Mobile Portal

AMSTERDAM, Sept 29 (Reuters) - KPN Telecom mobile unit, KPN Mobile and NTT DoCoMo said on Friday they will form a joint venture which will launch a European mobile Internet portal.

The mobile portal will offer NTT's popular i-mode based mobile Internet services in addition to KPN's WAP (wireless application protocol) services.

The new portal is designed to exploit opportunities offered by movement towards higher-speed wireless services, including GPRS and UMTS, or third-generation mobile services.

The two said they would launch the portal, which intends to offer news, sporting events, mobile banking and e-commerce capabilities, "as early as possible in 2001".
