ASP would be one way. But more broadly, eventually Adobe will install Photoshop directly onto your hard drive. No CD, no installer program. The complete program with extensions (dlls) etc. will be installed from their servers. That will be the only way they will release it. In addition, frequent bug upgrades will only be available via internet install.

In some cases pirates will be able to copy all the files needed to run the program. But increasingly that will not work because of the complexity of professional software. You must have the installer program install the program for it to work correctly.

This is just conjecture on my part. Based on the fact that many upgrades are only available online now and you must supply a serial # online. Also Apples professional QT was available only through an online install at one point. Don't know if it is still limited this way.

The software companies have tried numerous ways to limit piracy, with very limited success. Dongles are a hassle, especially if you need more than one program with a dongle. Locked CD's are expensive to implement and pirates get around them. Pirates even get around the dongles with software dongles. Piracy will never go away but the companies will use online installs to give more pain to pirates.
