ADSL is a diversionary technology. Suppose Monday morning we would give a decent funeral to ADSL (by the ADSL I mean a DSLAM in the CO to provide broadband services, messing up with the MDF, having the outside plant guys whining about pair test, who will repair the faults, cable record issues, truck rolls and the list goes ad nauseam) what would happen?
ADSL RIP (Rest In Peace) would prompt a plethora of companies, engineers and investors to go after some other solution to reach the potential consumer for broadband. But as long ADSL is pretending to take over the world by storm, (and this has been happening for a while) MSO's, power utilities, Ricochet-type solutions, Teledesic, FTTC (Fiber To The Curb are paralyzed.
For the past 6 years we have had Telcos' using ADSL as a diversionary tactic. Note that whatever problem you throw at it they just create another DSL flavour of the month:
Splitter causing double pass in the MDF? Well, take the ADSL Forum crowd to the Hilton in some nice place and they devise spliterless ADSL. After a while no one is talking about spliterless ADSL and life goes on as usual.
ADSL for most of the cable plant is useless.
ADSL Forum goes to the Intercontinental Hotel and devised VDSL, just replace the long bad cables by fiber and put DSLAM near where the potential customers are.
Assymmetrical is no good for business. You've guessed: ADSL Forum has SDSL up their sleeves. There stays paralysed the competition to bring bandwidth to the masses.
