The last minutes of CUBE recovery may be related to the news that Videonics opened a huge market for Cube.
CAMPBELL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1997--Videonics, Inc. (NASDAQ:VDNX) announced today their intention to show a breakthrough in digital video capture and playback using an ordinary personal computer. Scheduled for official introduction at next month's PC Expo in New York, Videonics Python is the first external real-time MPEG video capture solution.
With a target list price of less than $400 -- less than half the price of other high-quality MPEG-1 video capture devices -- Python is destined to revolutionize the digital video market by making full motion video available to millions of desktop and laptop IBM-compatible PCs. Plug and Play Python attaches directly to a computer's parallel port in seconds, making it much easier to install than typical video capture boards. This parallel port connection also, for the very first time ever, allows laptop computer owners to capture full motion video. The included software package makes it easy to use for real-world solutions such as placing video on the World Wide Web, creating multimedia presentations, or e-mailing video clips. Real-time MPEG/JPEG Compression Python compresses video using industry-standard MPEG-1 at a 200:1 compression ratio, for efficient storage and electronic transmission. MPEG compression is performed by Python's own hardware, in real-time, for fast use without requiring lengthy processing by high-end computers. The product also makes it easy to capture and display high-resolution video stills, stored in standard JPEG format, as easily as it captures and plays back moving video. "Business and home computer users have been waiting for an easy and inexpensive way to capture and distribute high-quality full-motion video," noted Dean Tucker, Videonics Director of Desktop Marketing. "With the simplicity of our new parallel port plug-in device, even a computer novice can add full motion video to his or her PC in seconds, at a very affordable price. They won't have to open their computers to insert an expensive PC card. PC owners can enjoy the benefits of full-motion high quality video and easily 'V-mail' their videos anyplace in the world, place them on a web site, or use them for high-impact multimedia presentations." At PC Expo, Videonics will unveil an extensive suite of programs that will be included with Python to make it easy for users to use their still and video clips in a variety of ways. At PC Expo, the company plans to demonstrate working units and reveal detailed specifications. At the heart of Python's architecture is a new chipset from C-Cube Microsystems capable of MPEG-encoding NTSC/PAL video at SIF and QSIF resolutions. Videonics extends and enhances the video processing capabilities with a custom ASIC that draws on the company's extensive expertise in digital video post-production technology. Clint Chao, Director of Product Marketing for PC Products at C-Cube Microsystems, notes: "By combining C-Cube's compression technology with Videonics' extensive digital video expertise, Videonics has created a product that greatly simplifies video capture and playback. Now, more people than ever can enjoy the advantages of video on their computers." Videonics is a leading manufacturer of high-quality, digital video post-production equipment. Videonics products include edit controllers, mixers, signal processors, character generators and software packages that allow computers to interface with video sources and post-production equipment.
