<<If Rambus were to establish a precedent of being able to extract (extort?) 1% from their tiny portion of SDRAM IP, what is to keep all the other IP holders from spinning their patents off into parasitic IP companies like Rambus?

There is nothing particularly important about Rambus SDRAM IP. In fact, quite the contrary.>>

How long are the agreements for.
I doubt they could spin-off something that is licensed.
By legal contract, I do not believe what you are proposing can happen.
Remember the Industry paid TXN royalties for a long time.
After the cross licensing agreements expire, perhaps some might attempt this. But then if they all do, what gain is there to anybody.
Finally, as long as ANY of RMBS patents were needed, RMBS still gets its 1-5%

Does any one know how long the cross licensing agreements are for?

As for "There is nothing particularly important about Rambus SDRAM IP. In fact, quite the contrary".

We already discussed this did we not. I believe I asked the question why not do it now, and your reply was more or less "because of the costs to change design".

If costs are a deterrant to change, then their IP IS SIGNIFICANT, regardless of how IMPORTANT you FEEL it is!

Also the Industry spent 6 years trying to get around RMBS IP and came up with a solid losing effort on DDR.
So even with years of trying, they are behind the 8 ball with greater royalties going to DDR.

That in a nutshell says their IP IS SIGNIFICANT.
