Rich: You touch on an important point when it comes to both xDSL connectivity and cable connectivity. At its essence, when your machine is plugged into it you've got an open front door to the 'net. But it's a two way door. If someone gets your IP address they can waltz right in through that front door and see everything on your machine. Right now I consider this a rare possibility. But I'm a cynic about human nature. I'm sure the possibility will increase over time.

So....firewall, firewall, firewall. And for the average consumer I recommend ZoneAlarm, a sweet piece of software that's easy to use. It even goes so far as to make your PC "invisible" to any outside queries, unless you tell it otherwise. It also kicks up an alarm window should anyone from the 'web attempt to query your IP address, as well as showing you the IP address of the location attempting to query your machine. And along with this I recommend Neotracer, which is a ping, route and trace program you can use to identify any IP address attempting to access your machine.

These are just a couple of "must haves" in the 'ol tool-kit when you start seriously playing out there in cyberspace.

John~
