Frank: The only reason I can think of as to why union workers would be costlier than the 140 percent figure you quoted is that management's legal fees would tend to be higher in a union shop than a non-union shop. Other than that, all else should be roughly the same. Or am I missing something? I would also argue that 99% of union workers are very aware that benefits and retirement are as much a part of their compensation package as are wages. During the bargaining sessions I participated in, it's surprising how little time we actually spent on base salary issues and how much time we spent on everything else.
