A speculation on egos and inept handling of missed earnings:
It is not beyond the realm of believability that a major problem here is egos, not numbers. Put yourself in management's shoes: you screw up by pre-announcing cheap iMac ($799) which slows current sales and on top of that, you have trouble getting product out the door and into the channel. Maybe you even messed up on pricing the Cube. If you admit you messed up on such mundane details, it's out the door with you and off with your head. (even Jobs has to answer to the board & stockholders. He got booted once before. He knows he could get booted once again.) But, if its slow demand and weak euro, well, it's not really your fault. Or if it is, it's not the kind of problem any first year b-school student couldn't manage, (unlike the "inventory-management-production-level" problems).
First rule of everything: CYA
