I think there are plenty of singers (past and present) who have had voices that would not be considered optimal for singing.

Exactly. Some of 'em are great performers but none of 'em are good singers. Just imagine how great they'd be if they could sing too. Sammy Davis Jr shoulda stuck to dancing, Satchmo to playing the trumpet, etc., etc. Even Sinatra was a fabulous interpreter and a favorite of mine, but he wasn't a great vocal talent.
