Pinocchio: Re: "The fact is most union members today work for the government."

That is not true. Do not believe everything your fellow right-wingers post. Who are you including as unionized government workers? Teachers? Postal workers? Cops? Firefighters? University professors? Provide specifics, please.

Re: "Therefore, they see the growth of government as being in their best interest."

There is some truth to that statement. The United States military also would agree with that statement, by the way.

You'll also be pleased to know that the latest issue of NEA Today came in the mail this week. (My wife is public school teacher.) It has some very good articles, many of which are related to the upcoming election. The cover story is on a young teacher in Orange County, California. One of the blurbs reads: "NEA member Sandi Ortiz Ishii is working hard for the reelection of Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (she's the Democrat who sent GOP lackey Bob Dornan packing a few years ago), because on Capitol Hill Sanchez works for the kids."

The article goes on to explain how federal Jacob K. Javits grants have made a big difference in Ishii's school district, and that GOP lackey Dornan opposed funding for the Javits program, along with the entire federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act. In fact, the article goes on to say, Dornan had an education voting record, as tracked by NEA's legislative office, of zero.

The cover of the October issue shows eager fifth-graders in the young teacher's class cutting out newspaper articles about the upcoming election. Although Ms. Ishii is young, she is fighting to improve education in her school district. She truly is a teacher who is making a difference to improve the lives of her young students, most of whom are Mexican-Americans, so that they, too, can achieve the American dream.
