mportant point about C&W contract by: cmon_peter 10/2/00 9:13 am Msg: 53156 of 53156 There is an important fact about the C&W contract that everyone should take note of. As we all know, Nortel's current growth engine has been there ability to capitalize on the increase in demand for optical networking equipment, so far mostly transmission. Most people would agree that their future growth rests with optical networking and to some extent wireless.
Well, the above is all true, but the real theme of the C&W deal is a global carrier coming to Nortel for Succession solutions. Or in other words, coming to Nortel to transition their global network from the traditional TDM switched network to a next generation packet based infrastructure.
Hold on!! I thought Cisco was the next generation company?? I thought Nortel was a slow moving phone equipment provider?? NOT!!
This another key market need that Nortel has been working towards for the past couple years, and it looks like success is in the works. Above and beyond the need for optical equipment to handle higher bandwidth services, and wireless growth, the transition of global carriers (C&W, Worldcom, ATT, Deutsche Telekom, British Telecom, France Telecom ........) to packet based infrastructure is a key market need or growth opportunity that people need to remember!
Cisco's solution for this transition is to gut their network and replace with new equipment. Not going to happen. Nortel's solution is what the carrier's need as it migrates them over time from their traditional network to the next generation infrastructure. As for Lucent, Rich McGinn is too clueness about future customer needs to have a viable solution. |
