NTAP--Network Appliance Helps BP Exploration - Alaska - Inc. Find and Utilize New Fuel Sources for Energy-Hungry World SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 2000--Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP - news), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content management solutions, has been selected by BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. (BPXA) to support a variety of petrotechnical applications. BPXA was using a NetApp® F760 solution to store, manage, and access critical data, and is migrating to the company's newest solution -- the NetApp F840 -- to provide more power and capacity. Rapid, reliable access to information helps BPXA find, utilize, and manage new fuel sources while meeting the company's high safety and environmental standards.
BPXA is using Network Appliance(TM) solutions in an Oracle® database environment running subsurface modeling, reservoir simulation, and seismic interpretation applications. More than 200 geologists; geophysicists; petroleum, reservoir, and drilling engineers; and others running both Windows NT® and UNIX® in a multiprotocol environment will access the data stored on multiple NetApp F840s.
As Tom Bundy, technical information systems manager at BPXA noted, ``Our geoscientists and engineers require massive amounts of data to be available rapidly, and our technical support team requires a product that is reliable, easy to install and administer, and highly scalable as our application needs grow. Network Appliance filers are the ideal solution: automated self-diagnostic tools prevent downtime, the products are performance-tuned right out of the box, rapid file backup via NDMP protocol, and we can give users increased or decreased capacity on demand in a few short minutes.''
``BPXA is a pioneer and leader in securing new fuel resources while protecting the delicate Alaskan ecosystem,'' said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. ``They are also a leader in maximizing returns on IT investments, which is why BPXA looks to Network Appliance for its storage. BPXA helps power planet Earth, and Network Appliance helps power BPXA.''
BPXA has had a presence on the North Slope of Alaska since the late 1960s. They now have several producing oil fields and planned developments. The company's goals are ``no accident, no harm to people, and no damage to the environment.''
